An aide to Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson has resigned after reportedly spending $9,000 in city funds on personal expenses.
In a press conference Tuesday, Mayor Johnson said the woman, Lisa Serna-Mayorga, paid back every dollar she took.
“She has paid back the dollars in a really quick manner,” Johnson said.
Serna-Mayorga reportedly spent the money at Disneyland, among other places. She resigned after a month-long investigation.
Johnson said he still considers Serna-Mayorga a friend, though he’s disappointed in her actions. Johnson also said that he doesn’t expect this type of misconduct to become a regular thing.
“I don’t fear that this is a trend with city employees,” Johnson said. “Again, we have safeguards in place that are continuing to monitor and audit and make sure that this doesn’t happen.”
The Sacramento Police announced Wednesday afternoon that they have begun a criminal investigation into Serna-Mayorga’s use of city credit cards.
Joaquin McPeek, a spokesman for the mayor’s office, said in a statement that Mayor Johnson supports the investigation.
“While he remains saddened and disappointed by the conduct in question, he will always insist on full accountability for all city employees entrusted with public dollars,” McPeek wrote.
