A CHP officer and another person were shot Tuesday morning along a busy highway.

The suspect in the shooting has died, according to the CHP, and the officer is in critical condition.

The shooting happened along 680 in the Walnut Creek area during the morning commute.

Investigators say the driver shot at the CHP officer and a second CHP officer fired at the driver.

The name of the driver, who was the lone occupant in the car, has not been released. Officers must first notify the driver’s next of kin.

Highway 680 between S Main Street and Rudgear Road was closed for hours, with two lanes reopening shortly before 4:30 p.m. The other three lanes are scheduled to open around 7 p.m.

Officers found a woman originally thought to be a second suspect in the shooting. Investigators determined that she was not involved.

Jimmy Lee, a spokesman with the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office said Tuesday afternoon that investigators will analyze dashboard camera footage of the shooting.
