A West Sacramento Police officer struck and killed a pedestrian Tuesday night while responding to a backup call during a stolen car chase.

Police say an officer saw a stolen vehicle and tried to pull it over, but the driver fled around 8:30 p.m.

The officer called for back up while chasing the stolen vehicle. One of the responding officers hit and killed a pedestrian on West Capitol Avenue near Pine Street. The officer stopped.

According to police, the 17-year-old driver of the stolen vehicle ran into a house a few miles away, near Park Boulevard and Maryland Avenue, on foot. Those inside the house detained the man under citizen’s arrest until police could arrive.

The teen could face charges in the pedestrian’s death because police say he caused the chase.
