Fires at unoccupied homes have become an “epidemic,” says Sacramento Fire Battalion Chief Chris Ortiz, after an abandoned duplex caught on flames Wednesday morning.

The fire started at a home’s back patio on Fruitridge Road near 71st Street around 2:30 a.m. Ortiz said the fire on Fruitridge appeared suspicious since no one was around.

He says fire crews keep having to come out to “vacant homes that have been boarded up.”

He also added Sacramento Police told him the home had been a drug house in the past, but fire crews didn’t find evidence of that Wednesday morning.

An investigator has been called out to determine the cause of the fire.
