A CHP motorcycle officer was run off the highway Tuesday morning by a car who had been rear-ended near the Greenback Lane exit. Traffic in both directions was slow going for a few hours as the accident was cleaned up and investigators tried to piece together what happened.

Just before 8 a.m., a person driving a red car in the westbound lanes was rear-ended by a tan car. The red car’s driver reacted after being hit, and got in the way of the CHP officer, running the officer off the road.

The officer was thrown from the bike and has serious injuries. The red and tan car both pulled over after the accident. No word on the extent of those drivers’ injuries.

The accident debris is in the westbound lanes, but drivers in the eastbound lanes stopped to help and that is slowing traffic. Right now the center divider and left lane are blocked.
