Probation Officers are alerted when the automated license plate reader scans a license plate listed as stolen.

The Sacramento County Probation Department has recovered its 300th stolen vehicle thanks to automated license plate reader technology.

It was a Toyota pick-up truck found on Cambridge St. in Sacramento.

The most commonly stolen cars are Hondas and Toyotas, according to the Department.

In April 2010, the Department equipped two of its patrol vehicles with with the technology which uses four cameras to scan license plates surrounding it. More than 3,000 license plates can be scanned per hour, and is much more effective than a human doing the same job. The Department said normally only a dozen stolen vehicles are recovered each year.

The 300th recovery is impressive considering the Department found its 200th stolen vehicle five months ago in May.
