A mother, father and two children were attacked by four men Wednesday night in their North Highlands apartment.

Sacramento County Sheriff’s deputies say the attackers came in with a knife, stabbing the man and his two sons. The mother, who answered the door, was reportedly hit in the head with a bat or a pipe.

A downstairs neighbor heard the commotion and tried to help. He told FOX40 is too afraid to show his face on camera or give his name.

“I heard a rumbling upstairs, crashing and yelling,” the man said. “Saw four guys running downstairs. (I) got upstairs to check on my neighbors and four of them were hurt.”

Many in the neighborhood say their area was once considered pretty safe but they’re now looking at their familiar surroundings with suspicion.

“Are my neighbors going to be O.K.? Is someone coming back?” the neighbor said. “Am I gonna have to defend my kids? My neighbors’ kids?”

Deputies have not released any information about the attackers.
