The mayor of the City of Stockton wants to increase the sales tax by half a percent.

The increase would generate around $15 million for the city and put more than 100 police officers on the streets but there is some opposition from members of the Stockton City Council.

Mayor Anthony Silva has yet to make a formal request to the council, but he says if it is passed he will make sure the money is set aside so that it is not taken during the bankruptcy proceedings.

The mayor needs four members of the City Council or 10,000 signatures to bring this issue to a public vote.
