Modesto Police arrested two men suspected of stealing a car at gunpoint after a short chase that ended in a crash early Thursday morning.

Shortly before 2 a.m., investigators say someone was getting gas at a 76 station on 9th Street when he was approached by three men. One of them had a gun.

Police say the men noticed the bank card in the victim’s wallet, got his PIN, and drove off in his car. They were able to withdraw an undisclosed amount of cash.

The victim was able to call police from a nearby business.

A few hours later, at about 5:30 a.m., an officer spotted the stolen 1998 green Honda Civic and tried to get the men to stop.

The alleged carjackers took officers on a short chase until the Civic crashed into a tree at Mt. Vernon Drive and Katherine Avenue. Officers arrested 44-year-old Garry Thornhill and 42-year-old James Highfill.

Investigators continue to search for the third alleged carjacker.
