Authorities say they have identified the man suspected of impersonating a CHP mechanic in a series of incidents back in January.

Ernest Alvarez was already in custody and was said to have been positively identified as the suspect by the people he scammed.

During his time posing as a CHP mechanic, authorities say that Alvarez took a total of $320 from his victims. Alvarez is said to have pulled up next to people broken down on Highway 99 and I-5 and offered help in exchange for money.

The San Joaquin County DA’s office will be charging Alvarez with charges of impersonating an officer and petty theft.
