First Day of Voting Ends with Black Smoke, No Pope

(Chicago Tribune)– The first vote taken inside the conclave to elect the next pope was inconclusive, according to the black smoke that billowed out of the chimney on the Sistine Chapel rooftop Tuesday night.

Crowds that gathered in St. Peter’s Square just a couple hours before the smoke signal let out a low roar of disappointment and began to file out.
