A U.S. Navy SEAL killed in a training accident this week in Arizona belonged to the same elite squad that includes those chosen to go after Osama bin Laden in Pakistan two years ago, a source said.

The accident occurred Thursday at a U.S. Special Operations Command parachute testing and training facility at Pinal Airpark, Arizona. Another SEAL was injured, in addition to the one who died, a U.S. Department of Defense official said Friday.

Both SEALs were transported to the University of Arizona Medical Center in Tucson, where one remains hospitalized, the official said.

The accident is under investigation.

It was not immediately clear whether the deceased SEAL took part in the May 2011 mission that ended with the al Qaeda leader killed in his third-floor bedroom in a compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan.

Lt. Cmdr. David McKinney, a spokesman for the Naval Special Warfare Command, did not reveal Friday what unit, specifically, the SEAL member killed in Arizona belonged to. He did say, however, that he “was assigned to an East Coast-based Naval Special Warfare unit.”
