Boston Marathon runner Hannah Schmidt speaks to FOX40 via Skype. She narrowly missed the explosion.

Four days after her 18th birthday, Hannah Schmidt flew out to Massachusetts to participate in the Boston Marathon.

“It was just the shock of it that was so crazy” she told FOX40 Monday during a Skype interview.

The Elk Grove resident tells us she missed the first explosion by a matter of seconds.

“I crossed the finish line, look behind me, and I saw it.” she said.

If she had finished one minute later, she could have been killed.

“It was so instant, everyone was so silent not really knowing what do do,” Schmidt said.

Schmidt is a Senior and Varsity Cross County runner for Pleasant Grove High School.

In our Skype interview, she told FOX40 Monday was a day where her perseverance paid off.

“At the end I got really tired. I wanted to stop and take a break, slow down,” she said. “But something was telling me to keep going.”

On Monday, perseverance happened to save Schmidt’s life.
