Vegans Accused of Bullying Agriculture Students Online

The debate between vegan students and those that eat meat at Elk Grove High School has made its way onto Instagram and other social networks, and the words being used aren’t all that pleasant.

“[One student] keeps posting about goats and sheep and pigs and dead pictures and them being slaughtered,” said agriculture student Katie Velon.

The online allegations also include angry words for the schools Ag program, saying it “leads to the slaughtering of animals” and even describing how animals are drained of blood while their hearts are still beating.

But Ag students say they’re proud of what they do and of what they’re learning.

“I don’t think it’s fair for people to be saying that, because they don’t understand the work we put into all these animals. And it’s something we voluntarily do,” said student Miranda McCurry.

The debate heated up online after outside vegan groups became involved, calling meat eaters “carcass crunchers.” Some students have also reportedly been passing out fliers on campus.

Back on the farm, Ag students make no apologies for raising animals for food, though do understand the vegans’ concerns.

“It’s depressing,” Velon told FOX40. “But it’s still fun to work with [the animals] while they’re alive.”

One of the vegan students involved spoke with FOX40 but declined to go on camera. She said that no vegan Elk Grove student has used the “carcass cruncher” term and that she has not passed out any fliers.

Steve Bunnell filed this report.

Imagine, an agriculture program that leads to the slaughtering of animals. Who would have thunk it? And, pointing that out is bullying?

This has got to be one of the silliest pieces of drivel attempting to pass as a news item I've read in a long time, for which it is not all surprising that no-one has claimed the reporting of it. Perhaps, FOX40 should go video paint drying. What a story that would be!

The vegan lifestyle causes the death of far more animals than they want to believe. Animals are slaughtered by harvesting the foodstuffs they eat, and those animals aren't used for food, but are just left to die in the fields.

The vegan lifestyle isn't possible without the benefits of modern chemistry. There are certain nutrients that aren't possible to consume without either eating animal protein, or popping pills. Further, have you ever seen a really healthy-looking vegan? They all have dull skin and hair, lackluster eyes, and a really bad smell.

The Venus Fly Trap: proof that even vegetables eat meat. Seriously, though, there are far too many radical, fringe groups (those with small percentages of support) that make the loudest noise, then the media makes it out as though they're mainstream. While I don't condone abusing animals in any way, shape, or form, I also don't condone malicious attacks by any group.

Discourse, dialogue … the objects of conviction. Today's generations just don't have it. All they have is watered down education and every curse word in the book. By the way, swearing only highlights your lack of intelligence or your inherent laziness because you can't find a better word. 'Carcass crunchers?' That's creative, if not rude.

GET A LIFE! You are tough skinned carnivores and they are measily little herbivores. They are nothing more than a expansion of PETA who cannot tolerate Gov Christi killing and spider and OMG he was filmed doing. Thank you a story as newsworthy as an announcement of "farts".

sensitive extremists should be publicly bent over and spanked for being so stupid.

I go to this school and this issue is getting ridiculous. My friends have been called "corpse crunching, puss slurpers" and that is way out of line. Just leave people alone and let them live their lives.

Actually it takes about 8 times as much plant matter (and harvesting of feed) to fatten animals for the same quantity of nutrition that plants provide. So eating plants directly saves about 30 nonhumans every year:

And you are terribly mistaken about the inadequacy of a vegan diet. There is no "pill popping" necessary while eating nutritious plants. Besides… Research all the additives and supplements are in livestock feed-There's everything from iron to B12. Why filter your nutrition through an animal that is being artificially induced with supplements?

Finally — Please do search "vegan athletes" – I'm quite certain you'll see that there are many champs out there doing (and looking) just fine on plants! I believe the only thing that smells rotten is your hostile, erroneous and poorly researched information. Quite frankly with all you are wrong about… Your comment stinks.

The meat/dairy/egg industries spends hundreds of millions of dollars lying to the public about their product. But no amount of false propaganda can sanitize meat. The facts are absolutely clear: Eating meat is bad for human health, catastrophic for the environment, and a living nightmare for animals. There's never been more compelling reasons or a better time to opt for a plant based diet.

Can someone please point out what the vegans said that is untrue? Because from what I can tell they just pointed out what truly happens when an animal is killed. I am surprised that the agricultural students are offended by people talking about what happens to an animal in order for it to become food. They themselves know what happens, that’s why the one student said it was depressing. They say they are proud of what they do & in that case they should have no problem with others discussing the very same practices that they participate in everyday.

I'm not sure what's more disturbing, the ignorance in this comment, or the number of people who voted it up.

If you're concerned about animals killed by harvesting plant foods, eat the plants directly, it's about 15 times more efficient than growing crops to feed animals and then eating animals. If you want to talk about chemistry and popping pills, I'd say animal ag is at the top of the heap for all that. 80% of all antibiotics produced is used in the livestock industry. Apparently the animals are quite sick. When you get hit with MRSA you will be sick too and there will be no antibiotics to help you. Furthermore I don't know any vegans with T2 diabetes, high blood pressure, or heart disease, or at least any who take medications for those diseases. Who are the real pill poppers in this culture?

Furthermore yes I know lots of healthy/healthy looking vegans. I am one of them. My biggest problem is that I tend to have a lot of energy. That can be tough when you work at a desk job, but I manage it by spending a lot of time hiking and running.
