An “ongoing investigation” has led the FBI to an office at the California State Capitol Building, the Department of Justice confirmed.
The FBI has not said anything further, but says there is no threat to public safety.
Sen. Ron Calderon’s office is among two locations being searched. The other is the Latino Legislative Caucus office at the Legislative Office Building on N Street.
Investigators are unable to release more information, as the court documents have been sealed by a federal judge.
Paige St. John, a capitol reporter with FOX40 sister publication the Los Angeles Times, reported early Tuesday evening that federal investigators say the search is not related to ricin.
Several elected officials have been sent ricin-tainted mail elsewhere in the country.
