More than 4,000 feet above ground hidden deep in the El Dorado Forest, it is hard to imagine that the fire may have all started when a towed vehicle on Highway 50 lost a tire.

“As the vehicle continued down it was sending off some embers and some sparks,” said Phillip McCain with California Highway Patrol. “Right now we are investigating this is a misdemeanor hit and run traffic collision.”

It is being considered a hit and run because the driver towing the car ditched it.

The U.S. Forrest Service is also conducting their own investigation.
