A former Modesto teacher can avoid jail time and a trial, on charges of oral copulation with a minor.
James Hooker pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor Monday in a Modesto courtroom.
Hooker gained national attention last year when he left his wife for a former student.
He was facing a felony charge in connection with accusations from a woman who said she and Hooker had an inappropriate relationship in 1998, when she was in high school.
Jury selection for a trial on these charges was set to start Monday, when the plea deal was announced.
In exchange for pleading no contest, Hooker will have to have to register as a sex offender and will be sentenced to four years’ probation. He faces 180 days in jail, but that time is suspended if he doesn’t violate parole.
Although he was investigated for allegations of inappropriate behavior with his current girlfriend, charges were not brought.
