Authorities are now saying that one man is dead after a plane crash near the South Lake Tahoe airport late Monday morning.
Steven Lefton, 67, was piloting the plane and was killed on impact, according to a release from the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office.
Witnesses told authorities that the plane started going down shortly after taking off from the airport. Soon, the plane crashed into some pine trees and flipped over.
Lefton’s wife, Karen, is said to have sustained moderate injuries in the crash. A woman walking her dog in the area happened upon the crash wreckage and provided first aid to Karen before first responders showed up. The woman, Beth Frisby, is an CalStar flight nurse and was off-duty at the time.
Due to fuel from the crashed plane leaking, crews had to spray fire retardant foam on the plane.
Karen was airlifted to Renown hospital in Reno. Her current condition has not been released.
The couple is from Palo Alto.
FAA and NTSB investigators are looking in the cause of the crash.
