Every summer for nearly 30 years, some of the best American tennis players have called Sacramento home.

“This is actually my first time in Sacramento. I’ve never been here before,” said Taylor Townsend. “It’s like I’ve got a whole new family.”

Townsend is poised to be the next bug thing in American tennis. At 17, she’s been ranked the #1 junior, and she’s gunning for a career in the biggest tournaments.

But if Townsend is a player to watch, is tennis really a sport to watch here in Sacramento?

“Oh, it’s just awesome,” said Joanne Horrell.

Horrell has been coming to World Team Tennis in Sacramento for 20 years. She says this is a great sports town that embraces a great sport.

“Not only baseball and basketball, and now soccer. Bring tennis into the mix and have the whole thing together under one umbrella,” Horrell said.

After all, growing the next generation of athletes is great, but only if you’re also growing the next generation of fans too.
