MENDOCINO COUNTY–

What was meant to be a fun summer camp trip for a local Boys Scouts troop quickly turned to a deadly nightmare.

As a crew of scouts headed down Highway 20 to Camp Wente, a chain reaction crash sent a car colliding head-on with a van carrying six scouts and one scout leader.

“We lost one of our most beloved leaders immediately in the accident,” said scout mom Melyssa Descovich.

Robert Wayne Garrison was killed instantly. His 14-Year-old son was transported to an area hospital in critical condition.

“Some of our boys right now just really need prayer,” said Descovich.

Living up to the scouts’ motto “be prepared,” a group of scouts traveling closely behind knew exactly what to do.

“They snapped right into action. They were actually there and all really became heroes and rescued many of our other scouts that became hit.”

The scouts, who hail from Newcastle to Loomis, are receiving counseling for their tragic loss.
