Scene of the fire, with homes clearly near the flames.

Crews battled a fire in the Keyes area in between Ceres and Turlock.

The fire started some time after 6:30 p.m. and looks to have originated from an abandoned garage and shed near Motzinger Road and Anna Avenue.

Neighbors told FOX40 that the structures have caught on fire before.

Two apartment complexes were threatened by the fire, but firefighters were able to contain the inferno before it could damage more structures.

Smoke from the fire could be seen for miles around.

Fire crews from around the region – including Keyes, Burbank-Paradise, Turlock, Denair, Ceres and Modesto – came in to help.
