NEWMAN—

Police and a SWAT unit have surrounded a home in the small Central Valley city of Newman Monday night.

The situation started around 5 p.m. when a man and his neighbor near S Street and Inyo Avenue got into some kind of fight. The man pulled out a gun and the neighbor called 911.

A Newman Police officer showed up to try and work things out, but the man is said to have pointed a rifle at the officer. The officer ran for cover, while the man bolted for his home and barricaded himself inside.

SWAT and Stanislaus County Sheriff’s deputies have also shown up to the area, but they have not been able to contact the suspect.

The suspect is known to authorities, but they have not identified him. He is said to be on probation for narcotics and domestic violence.

Me and my three kids were evacuated at 6:30 from our home on T street….we only have one car and my husband was on his way home from work we were told we had to leave any way. We were directed to walk until my husband got to town to pick us up. Our family just moved here and we have no friends or relatives to go to…..we had to sit in our car for hours waiting…. your going to evacuate three streets for our safety i understand…..but give us some place to go….
