There is food and fun, but ultimately it is all about getting to know your neighbors.

“37 million people in the United States get together on National Night Out to kind of get to know each other face to face, talk about what is going on in the community and foster a dialogue about how we can improve the community,” said Isaac Gonzalez, Tahoe Park resident.

In the Tahoe Park neighborhood, residents are gearing up for National Night Out which starts tomorrow evening at 6 p.m.

The event was created to help neighbors fight crime — and this year, they are getting a boost from a new neighbor known as

“Nextdoor has been a really good tool for neighbors to communicate with each other for free,” said Gonzalez.

With 900 residents signed up with Nextdoor, Tahoe Park is the largest Sacramento community to use the site.

It has already proved its value, most recently when a resident was caught surrounded by a group of aggressive pit bulls that managed to get out of their backyard.

Once neighbors found out through Nextdoor, they opted to help out.

“People are saying we will plug the holes and can we get on the property to do that,” said Biggs.

65 neighborhoods throughout Sacramento will participate in National Night Out.

The festivities in Tahoe Park will take place on four blocks and the community center.
