Ripon Police say they caught a man trying to steal 500 gallons of diesel fuel from Ripon High School early Wednesday morning red-handed.

Officers got a report of a man siphoning gas from a storage tank. Police say they found 44-year-old Joe Leonardo Sr. in the middle of filling tanks in his trailer.

Leonardo was hiding inside the trailer when cops showed up, according to investigators.

The fuel Leonardo is accused of stealing is normally used for school buses. He has already transferred 500 gallons, or $2,250-worth, of fuel.

Leonardo, of Ceres, was booked into county jail on one count of grand theft.
