“It’s like we lost a family member. Steve has been here for over thirty years,” said Ed Santopadre, Vacaville High School principal.

Hearts are broken within the Vacaville High family as its beloved football coach, teacher and friend Steve Green lost his battle with cancer yesterday.

“He’s done so many things for so many people in this community. It’s just really a sad day for all of us. It’s really a hard time,” Santopadre said.

It’s hard for the students he’s touched, the kids he’s coached and people he’s befriended since he began at Vacaville High in 1979.

Yesterday, he passed away peacefully with his family and close friends, including Santopadre, by his side.

“He looked great. He looked like Steve Green,” said Santopadre.

The lasting image of that big guy proudly representing the Bulldogs he loved so dearly.

“He never missed a day at work. When you needed him at a rally to get the kids fired up, he was the guy,” Santopadre said.
