Three people died in a major freeway accident early Friday morning in San Joaquin County.

It happened on I-5 just south of the Walnut Grove exit around 1 a.m.

A 23-year-old woman driving a Jeep Cherokee suspected of DUI on northbound I-5 hit the back of a big rig.

She lost control and drove onto the southbound lanes.

The Jeep then crashed into a Volkswagen Beetle convertible traveling south and was then hit by a big rig that wasn’t able to stop in time.

A man and two women in the Volkswagen died. None of them were wearing seat belts.

The driver of the big rig driving southbound suffered only minor injuries.

The Jeeps’s driver was arrested for DUI and three counts of vehicular manslaughter.

Both lanes on I-5 are currently open.
