The Red Cross Shelter for the Rim Fire is a bit less crowed tonight after the Pine Mountain Lake Community was deemed safe enough for residents to return home.

Many of residents evacuated Wednesday and had been waiting anxiously to come home since then.

Residents east of Highway 120 to Buck Meadows were also aloud to come home. There are still around 134 people at the Red Cross shelter hoping their community is safe soon.

Cal Fire says they are working as fast as they can to get people home and put this fire out. As of Sunday night, the fire has grown to 143,980 acres – meaning the fire is larger than the city of Chicago. It is also the 14th largest wildfire in California history, according to Cal Fire.

Even as some evacuations have been lifted, other mandatory evacuations were announced Sunday afternoon.

Residents living north of Old Yosemite Road have been given a mandatory evacuation order. Evacuation warnings have been given to people living north of Bull Creek Road, Bondurant Mine Road, Texas Hill Road and Wampum Hill.

The Red Cross is still looking for donations to help with their evacuation center. For more information, head to their website here.
