They’re being stolen right out of driveways, in front of homes, and so far police don’t know who’s behind it.
Since August 1 of this year, Yuba City Police say 33 Honda Civics and Accords have been stolen. Thankfully, police have recovered 21 of the cars.
It’s puzzling to police, because many of the cars aren’t hot-wired or have the windows busted. FOX40 spoke with Bill Habib, who works at Yuba City Honda. We wanted to see how thieves were pulling off the crime.
“Depends on the year of the car, newer models have chips in the keys,” said Bill Habib, Service Manager at Yuba City Honda. “It’s pretty impossible to steal a newer Honda, the older ones you can get keys remade.”
Cars of choice are made between 1996 through 2005.
“In some cases they are looking for the VTec engines in the Civics, they’re hard to find. The value of one of those engines is $700 to $1200.”
Police are working to see if they have a car theft ring on their hands. If you know anything give Yuba City Police a call, (530) 822-2026.
