Firefighter at the Rim Fire

The Rim Fire isn’t spreading nearly as fast as it once was but it is still expanding, creeping toward 200,000 acres.

Firefighters have the flames 30 percent contained.

Mandatory evacuation orders still stand for the area south of Highway 120 and north of Old Yosemite Road. Tioga Road, west of the Yosemite Creek picnic area, remains closed.

The fire’s rapid spread, along with harsh terrain, has hindered firefighters’ efforts for quick containment.

Crews expect to have the fire contained by Sept. 20.
