A total of 241 people have been cited state-wide for fraudulently using disabled placards, the Department of Motor Vehicles announced.

The DMW orchestrated the operation Wednesday due to a growing number of complaints they’ve received from the public about the fraudulent use of disabled placards. Teams targeted shopping mall parking lots, colleges, business districts and other areas where the fraud was reportedly rampant.

Offenders face a misdemeanor citation with bail amounts ranging from $250 to $1,000, for the first offense.

Locally, DMV notes that 15 people were cited in the Roseville, Sacramento, Santa Rosa and Vallejo area, while 43 were cited in the Fresno, Bakersfield and Stockton area.
