The fatal shooting of 13-year-old Andy Lopez by a Sonoma County Sheriff’s Deputy is today being investigated by the FBI and Santa Rosa Police Department.
But Dani DeSantis already knows how she feels about it.
“It was really wrong for the police officers to shoot Andy. It’s not fair. He seems like he’s a really nice kid,” said nine-year-old DeSantis.
DeSantis is from Santa Rosa, and was one of several in Sacramento, Northern California, and around the country today demonstrating against police brutality. Lopez was killed October 22 when Deputy Erick Gelhaus says he missed took a toy gun for AK-47 rifle.
“When these things happen they eclipse the good officers are doing,” said Patricia DeSantis.
Patricia is Danny’s mom. Their family knows a lot about fatal force. Richard DeSantis, Danni’s dad, was shot dead by Santa Rosa police when she was only two.
He charged officers but was unarmed. The officers who fired on DeSantis were eventually cleared of wrongdoing.
“I want people to know that if anything like this happens to them they shouldn’t feel sad. They should stand up and be heard,” Dani DeSantis said.
And that’s what this group says they are doing today; standing up against what they are calling an epidemic.
