Part of Northbound I-5 Shut Down ELK GROVE –

Two trucks crashed early Wednesday morning, shutting down part of I-5 and delaying Elk Grove commuters.

A truck carrying empty containers had a flat tire, lost control and stopped in a lane on northbound I-5 around 4 a.m. A fuel truck also on northbound I-5 didn’t stop in time and hit the first truck, which flew over the freeway embankment.

The second truck was carrying hazardous oil and its estimated that approximately 100 gallons spilled on the freeway. Hazmat teams are currently on the scene. Cal Trans is putting sand on the freeway and will be sanding and sweeping until they get most of the oil off.

Both drivers were injured and taken to the hospital.

The freeway is shut down between Laguna Boulevard and Pocket Road. CHP hopes to have a couple lanes open by 8:30 a.m. but it’s unclear when all lanes will be open.
