Firefighters in Sacramento spent Christmas morning trying to save a two-story home.

Just before 1 a.m., firefighters responded to a home in the Rio Linda area. A large column of smoke was rising above the home and flames were visible.

The heavy fire weakened the roof, and after a quick search for possible victims, firefighters knew to retreat to the first floor for their safety.

The roof collapsed in sections, and fell to the second floor.

The home was being remodeled at the time of the fire, and no one lived inside.

Firefighters were able to protect some of the first floor from fire damage.

CHP officers and Sacramento County Sheriff deputies were both at the fire, investigating reports of shots fired before the fire started.
