Dozens of perfect strangers gathered along North B Street in Sacramento Wednesday, some of them came to eat and some of them came to serve.

One group called Seva, which is Punjabi for selfless service, passed out more than 300 meals. Alongside them, dozens of other families parked and unloaded food, as people in need lined up.

“This is truly Christmas” says Christine Hill, mother of a 2-year-old little boy. Hill says she’s been on and off the streets for years.

The county of Sacramento estimates that there are 2,500 homeless people within the county. That number, according to data, is up nearly 8% within the past two years.
