A Ceres man has been sent to the hospital in critical condition after he was found lying on a sidewalk Sunday afternoon.

Ceres Police were called to Mitchell and River Roads around 3:30 p.m. after hearing reports that a man had been walking in the area in bloody cloths carrying a knife.

When police arrived they were unable to find a weapon, but the victim was found lying along the sidewalk of Mitchell Road with a serious gunshot wound. Witnesses said they heard two shots fired.

While the investigation is still ongoing, police believe the shooting may have been gang related. The victim was reportedly making comments that referred to Norteños and Sureños.

‘”This is where Ceres boarders with Modesto near the airport. There is not much traffic here. For something like this to happen here is uncommon,” said Sgt. John King, Ceres Police Department.
