A Modesto family was displaced New Year’s Day after a Christmas tree fire spread inside their home, investigators said.

Firefighters were sent to the Seasons Way home just before 10 p.m. Investigators say the fire started after a Christmas tree fell into a lit fire place.

The bulk of the fire had already been put out with a garden hose and a window was smashed by the time crews arrived.

Firefighters extinguished the remainder of the flames and set up an exhaust fan to help get rid of the smoke.

Investigators say the flames damaged the living room and the kitchen, and the rest of the home sustained smoke damage. No one was hurt in the fire but the family of six was displaced.

An estimated $60,000 in damage was caused, fire investigators say.
