The City of Sacramento announced Thursday that it has filed for control of the downtown Macy’s Men’s and Furniture store through eminent domain.

The vacant store is an integral piece of property the city needs to build a planned sports and entertainment complex, where the Downtown Plaza mall currently stands.

City Coulncil members voted 7-2 Tuesday to move forward with the plan, but did not file a court action until Thursday.

FOX40 spoke with Mayor Kevin Johnson Wednesday, the night before the announcement, to get his thoughts on having to use eminent domain.
