The Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the shooting death of a man near Westley.

Investigators say a volunteer firefighter was driving into work around 6 a.m. when he found the man’s body in the road, initially thinking he’d been the victim of a hit and run.

Deputies arrived a short time later and found the man had been shot. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
