50 People Stranded after Amtrak Hits Bicyclist

A 38-year-old bicyclist is dead after being hit by an Amtrak train in Sacramento a little around 6:30 a.m. Friday.

About fifty people in the train were stranded for more than three hours while officials investigated the scene near Elder Creek Road and Power Inn Road. The train started in Sacramento and its final destination was Bakersfield. The train began moving to its next destination, Lodi, around 9:45 a.m.

Sacramento Police officers knew the man’s identity but couldn’t release it until the coroners office informed the next of kin about what had happened.

Witnesses told officials the man tried going under the crossing arms on the south side of Elder Creek Road. The arms were completely down when the man tried going underneath. The train was going 78 mph on a 79 mph zone, according to Sacramento Police.

No other trains were delayed Friday morning. Trains were rerouted to another track that runs parallel.

No one on the train was injured.
