SACRAMENTO-

The eight-day Amgen Tour of California is returning to Sacramento for the first time in 3 years.

The investment to bring the cycling event back wasn’t small, but the return is incredible according to the Sacramento Convention & Visitors Bureau.

“Three thousand hotel rooms and an $8.4 million economic impact,” boasted Bureau President Steve Hammond.

And the benefits of having the Amgen Tour return is more than just the teams and fans who will be in Sacramento to attend the race.

“The fact that it is televised,” Bureau V.P. Mike Testa said. “And the fact that it is broadcast to multiple locations and multiple countries is a big deal.  It is marketing for Sacramento.”

The Bureau would not release the exact figure it paid Amgen to hold it’s opening stage in Sacramento, but they weren’t shy about its projected return.

“The Convention and Visitors Bureau, and the City of Sacramento made an investment to bring them(Amgen) back,” said Hammond.  “And certainly the $8.4 million is a great return on our investment.”

The Amgen Tour of California begins May 11 in Sacramento.  Folsom will host the second stage of the race which wraps up May 18 in Thousand Oaks.
