Plans for a professional soccer field at Cal Expo will move forward, after the facility’s board approved a deal Friday.
The team, Sacramento Republic FC, reached a tentative deal to build a field, also called a pitch, at the site of the state fair earlier this month.
The Cal Expo Board voted unanimously Friday to approve the plan. According to the team, the stadium will be privately funded.
When the deal was announced a few weeks ago, team officials thought the pitch could be ready to play on this Spring, although likely not in time for their first game or two.
The team had secured Hughes Stadium at Sacramento City College to host their games.
The home opener on April 26 will still be at Hughes. Where the rest of the season’s games will be played will be announced once there is a firmer timeline for the new field.
