The California Highway Patrol says nine people were killed Thursday when a FedEx truck collided with a charter bus in Glenn County.
Of the 48 people reportedly on board, officials say 34 were taken to hospitals.
“We heard an explosion. We came outside and everything was already on fire,” witness Luis Lopez told FOX40.
The bus was carrying high schoolers from the Los Angeles area to a prospective student event at Humboldt State University.
Lopez reported hearing screams and cries for help. Before he was able to get closer, emergency crews had responded.
“There was a man that ran out and his back was on fire,” Lopez said.
Highway Patrol said the crash happened when the FedEx semi truck went through the center divide, clipped a car and hit the bus head on.
