Starting Tuesday, the commute for hundreds of Sacramento drivers will be a long one.
Only three lanes of eastbound Highway 50 will be open from now until May 21. The first phase, beginning Tuesday, will have the three right lanes open and close the 11th Street onramp. The second phase, starting May 7, will have the other three lanes open, but close the 11th and 16th street onramps, the connector ramp to southbound Highway 99 and the connector ramp to eastbound Business 80.
Similar closures will happen on westbound Highway 50 from May 27 to June 25.
The construction is expected to cause some serious delays, with some dubbing this project Sacramento’s “Carmageddon.”
Sacramento Regional Transit will see a bump in ridership during construction, with many of the area’s largest employers urging workers to take the bus or light rail.
“They gave an option to come by train, so they can provide shuttle from the railway station to here,” Elsamma Thomas said. Thomas is a nurse at the UC Davis Medical Center.
UC Davis Medical staff mostly rely on Highway 50 to get to work.
