A major milestone for Sacramento area sports occurred Saturday night when Hughes Stadium hosted the first ever home game for the Sacramento Republic Football Club. Thousands of fans turned out to support the city’s newest team.
Fans say it was a great honor to be at the first ever Republic FC home game despite the loss.
If the turnout was any indication, fans say our city is ready for a professional soccer team. More than 20,000 fans came to Sacramento City College’s Hughes Stadium, and it was a sellout crowd.
Before the game started many fans were at Track 7 Brewery, walking distance from the stadium, including members of the Tower Bridge Battalion, a fan group of The Republic. The fans organized chants and passed out printed lyrics so that more fans could join in.
Many fans have been waiting for years for Sacramento to get a soccer club, and now they believe it won’t be long until The Republic become part of Major League Soccer.
There will be just two more games at Sac City, May 3rd and May 17th. Then on June 7th, The Republic will play their first game on Bonnie Field at Cal Expo.
