Hundreds of homeless and advocates will gather at 12th and C Streets in Sacramento from Friday until Sunday to raise awareness on the need for more shelter.
“We desperately need a safe ground,” said David Andre, a homeless man.
David says he usually sleeps in his pick-up truck.
“I have to hide from police because camping and sleeping in a pick-up is illegal in the city of Sacramento,” said David.
Mark Merin, a board member with the group, Safe Ground Sacramento, wants to change the way homeless people like David live.
Safe Ground Sacramento believes every person should have a home.
The organization wants to purchase a much larger area elsewhere to build cabins for the homeless. It’s unclear where the final location will be.
“We have about 12 to 14 hundred people sleeping outdoors in the city of Sacramento that one safe ground community which could have 50 to 60 cabins is not going to be sufficient,” said Merin.
That’s why Merin hopes the homeless demonstration will motivate people to support their cause.
“Don’t we as people who have made their way in society have a responsibility for those less fortunate than us?” said Merin.
Andre hopes Merin’s efforts will bring change for his community.
“There has to be a place where people can sleep, where people can create, where people can have dignity, because right now, there really isn’t.”
