Five people were arrested after Yolo County Sheriff’s deputies raided a cockfight operation Saturday night.

Deputies, in a joint effort with Davis Police, entered a large barn a property on County Road 28 near Highway 113 in Woodland just after 11 p.m., where they found a cockfight in progress with more than 70 people, including two minors, in attendance.

Spectators then fled the scene, but deputies were able to arrest five suspects. Fourteen others were cited for the incident.

Investigators swept the scene and found ten dead roosters, 52 live roosters, and approximately $15,000 in cash. Ten roosters were later euthanized, due to the extent of their injuries.

The five men arrested face charges of animal cruelty, conspiracy, and possession of bird fighting equipment. They have since been released on bail, and will be in court June 18.
