Crews in Stockton were able to get a fire at the abandoned Earle Hotel under control Wednesday afternoon, nearly four hours after they first responded.
Firefighters say floors inside the building, which had been empty for 10 to 15 years, collapsed on top of each other. The outer structure remained intact, despite the danger that it could crumble.
Investigators have not said what may have caused the fire, but the building was known as a place frequented by transients and trespassers.
Firefighters doused the building from outside, as the interior was far too dangerous.
The Earle Hotel was more than 100 years old. A former owner told FOX40 that the city acquired the building from her and her husband to turn it into a parking lot years ago.
The fire was brought under control around 6 p.m.
