Four-Alarm Fire Prompts Evacuation

Almost two dozen homes were evacuated in Fairfield after a large grass fire burning near Beck Road jumped Highway 12.

“Next thing I knew, police come to the door saying get out,” Irma Hanvelt said.

Hanvelt said that’s when she grabbed her dog and her turtle and ran outside.

Firefighters struggled to contain the fire for over an hour, in 95 degree heat and strong winds. The winds carried smoldering embers across Highway 12 and started a second fire behind houses on James Street.

Neighbors there say it is not the first time that same field of dry grass has caught on fire.

“Before these people moved in, there was another family and they had an old truck and it caught fire, that time,” neighbor Trista McReynolds said.

“Oh yeah, I burned my toes the last time. We were out there fighting it,” said Hanvelt.

Fire Investigators are working to determine the cause of Sunday’s fire.
