Faced with shrinking groundwater levels, the Davis City Council has approved a mandatory 30 percent water use reduction Tuesday.

The previous policy in the city was a voluntary 20 percent reduction.

Outdoor irrigation was also limited to three days a week, with properties on opposite sides of the street alternating days, and only before 9 a.m. and after 6 p.m.

No outdoor watering is allowed on Mondays.
