Burning its way south from Interstate 80 into a ravine, the Applegate Fire had to pass through some populated areas.
Another three homes were lost overnight into Thursday.
"It's gonna happen, yeah. It's like earth quakes. You live in an earthquake area, you're eventually gonna get earthquake. Well here you're eventually going to get a fire. It's just a matter if when," resident Mark Wright said.
Wright's home was spared, but the flames came awfully close.
"It's just scary, but that's why I have all the goats and things. When I moved in you couldn't see up the hill. The whole area has been cleared, for this purpose," Wright said.
